• NIST Launches Centers for AI in Manufacturing and Critical Infrastructure (nist.gov) — From its Gaithersburg headquarters, NIST is investing $20 million to launch two new AI centers focused on boosting U.S. manufacturing productivity and protecting critical infrastructure from cyberthreats. The initiative, run with MITRE, aims to keep American industry competitive, strengthen cybersecurity, and expand public‑private research partnerships in cutting‑edge technologies like AI and quantum science.
   

• Samsung Biologics to Acquire Drug Manufacturing Facility in $280M Deal (commercialobserver.com) — Major biotech investments are reshaping the Rockville–Gaithersburg life sciences corridor, with Samsung Biologics buying GSK’s Rockville manufacturing campus and Matan Companies leasing a large Gaithersburg complex to Montgomery County Public Schools. AstraZeneca is also expanding its huge Gaithersburg campus as part of a multibillion‑dollar U.S. investment push, reinforcing the city’s role in a fast‑growing biotech hub that could mean more jobs and activity nearby.
   

• Some of the World's Atomic Clocks Were Off Last Week (by 5-Millionths of a Second) (nytimes.com) — Gaithersburg’s NIST timekeeping facility helped keep official U.S. time stable after high winds in Colorado briefly knocked some atomic clocks off by a few millionths of a second. Because NIST’s network includes redundant clocks in Gaithersburg and Fort Collins, the disruption had minimal impact on GPS, banking, and other systems that rely on precise timing.
