Council in the Communities Meetings Expand in Scope and Geography

The first meeting with this new format will take place on Wednesday, March 29 at at Watkins Mill Elementary School.

From City of Gaihersburg: For many years the Mayor and City Council have accommodated neighborhood-specific requests for information through the Council in the Communities meetings. The meetings, generally held in schools or community clubhouses, featured elected officials and representatives of key City departments providing project updates and discussing the concerns unique to that neighborhood.

"With Gaithersburg's rapid growth over the last few years, I see Council in the Communities as a vehicle for us to be proactive in giving all of our residents an additional opportunity to get to know their city government and how we're working to serve them,” said Mayor Jud Ashman. “I also see it as a chance for us to listen to voices we don't always hear from and to better understand both how this community is working for them, and how we can do better.”

Staff from the City’s Neighborhood Services Division divided the City into eight geographic areas. The intention is to have four meetings each calendar year, so each area will host a Council in the Communities meeting once every two years.
