Fields Road Elementary Students Raise More Than $2K for Hurricane Sandy Victims

Fields Road Elementary School is the latest to be recognized by the city of Gaithersburg for being "great."

Principal Kathryn Rupp and art teacher Loanne Nguyen joined the Gaithersburg mayor and City Council Monday evening to receive the city's GREAT Award. 

GREAT stands for “Gaithersburg Recognizing Educational Achievement Today” and it promotes and celebrates higher achievement and successes in Gaithersburg area schools, according to the city.

Fields Road Elementary was honored for its “Heart House Project.” Under Nguyen's direction, Fields Road students made and sold original art “House” jewelry and magnets.

The students' projects raised over $2,000 and all proceeds benefit the Red Cross to support victims of Hurricane Sandy.
