Gaithersburg Book Festival Workshops, Activities Announced

The Gaithersburg Book Festival will be held May 21. Here are some of the workshops scheduled for kids and adults.

GAITHERSBURG, MD — The workshops offered for both children and adults at the Gaithersburg Book Festival were just announced with sneak peeks of what to expect.

The festival, which is returning in person May 21 after being held virtual for two years, will be at Bohrer Park.

"Since its inception in 2010, the Festival has quickly become one of the nation's top literary events, attracting hundreds of award-winning and best-selling authors, poets and songwriters from across the country to its beautiful park setting," the festival's website says.

Adult Workshops

  • How to Self-Publish Your Work in Multiple Formats – Alice Langholt, Ph.D., 10 a.m.
  • Learn Character, Learn Voice – Leah Henderson, 11 a.m.
  • Capturing Your Story: The Art of the Memoir – John DeDakis, noon
  • How to Submit Short Writing for Publication – Arthur Klepchukov, 1 p.m.
  • Escribiendo inicios y fronteras (Writing Beginnings and Borders) – Ofelia Montelongo
    2 p.m. – Note: This workshop will be fully conducted in Spanish for writers who write in Spanish.
  • Write & Recite Poems – Joy Jones, 3 p.m.
  • Build a Writing Practice that Works – Melanie Figg, 4 p.m.
  • Writing a Picture Book: 6 Essentials! – Carla Mae Jansen, 5 p.m.

Children's Workshops

  • Creating Super Cats and Vile Villains: A Kids Comics Workshop – John Gallagher, 10:15 – 10:45 a.m.
  • Mirror, Mirror and Magnificent Me – NoNieqa Ramos, 11 to 11:45 a.m.
  • The Basics of Drawing – Dan Santat, noon to 12:45 p.m.
  • Brainstorm Your College Essay Topic – Suzanne Zweizig, 1 to 1:45 p.m.
  • Drawing Animals: Either Realistic or Funny – Timothy Young, 2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.
  • Comics Co-Lab: Kids Graphic Novel Workshop – Dave Roman and John Patrick Green, 3 to 3:45 p.m.
  • Create Haiku Poetry – Jennifer Klein, 4 to 4:45 p.m.

There will also be a multicultural story time tent, a typewriter set up, a tent to learn more about braille, and more.
