Gaithersburg Declares Snow Emergency

Cancellations, parking limitations, and what a city ordinance says about shoveling sidewalks.

The City of Gaithersburg has issued a snow emergency effective Tuesday afternoon. The Mayor and City Council meeting scheduled for Tuesday was also cancelled.

Notification for when the the snow emergency would be lifted will posted on the city’s website.

The snow emergency calls for the mandatory removal of cars from snow emergency routes and cul-de-sacs. Failure to comply could result in ticketing or towing.

Also, residents, property managers and businesses are required to clear snow an dice from sidewalks abutting their property within twelve hours of the last snowfall or freeze, according to the city’s streets and sidewalks ordinance.

Recycling Schedule

Regular recycling will be held as scheduled on Wednesday, pending an assessment of weather conditions in the morning.  Cancellations will be noted on the city’s website. If recycling is cancelled, the make-up date will be Saturday, Jan. 25.  

During inclement weather residents are encouraged to hold their recyclables for their next scheduled collection date.  Residents who do put out recyclables are asked not to put containers in areas that would interfere with snow plowing.
