1. Montgomery County Public Libraries Offer Free Printing and Copying (What to Know) (sourceofthespring.com) — Gaithersburg library users can now print and copy key documents for free each day, with up to 15 black‑and‑white pages or 2 color pages at Montgomery County branches. Starting January 11, the Gaithersburg branch will also be open Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., expanding weekend access and programming for local residents.
   

2. Gophers receive transfer commitments from ex-Michigan State cornerbacks Aydan and Elisha West (startribune.com) — A former Quince Orchard High football standout from Gaithersburg, defensive back Aydan West is transferring from Michigan State to play for the University of Minnesota, bringing three years of eligibility. West, a two-time state champion who intercepted eight passes in high school, will join his brother Elisha and safety Parker Knutson in strengthening the Gophers’ secondary.
   

3. Money for climate action is drying up. Are local officials still making progress? (thebanner.com) — Montgomery County officials report strong progress on their Climate Action Plan, including completing a new microgrid at the 6th District police station in Gaithersburg to keep it operating during long power outages. They’ve advanced 63 of 84 climate goals, from free Ride On buses to more electric vehicles and a net‑zero school, but warn shrinking federal and possibly state funding could slow future projects.
   

4. SoberRide Surpasses 100,000 Free Rides During New Year's Holiday (mocoshow.com) — Gaithersburg residents are included in the SoberRide program that just surpassed 100,000 free New Year’s holiday rides, helping keep impaired drivers off local roads. The WRAP-run service partners with Lyft to offer no-cost, code-based rides across the region during high-risk holidays like New Year’s, Super Bowl Sunday, and Halloween.
   

5. The Defense Department officially has a new CIO (federalnewsnetwork.com) — Federal lawmakers’ new spending deal would boost funding for NIST’s main campus in Gaithersburg, directing $128 million to upgrade outdated facilities and $55 million to support AI research. The broader package also reshapes several federal tech, defense, and oversight priorities, but the NIST investment could mean construction jobs and long-term research infrastructure benefits close to home.
