GAITHERSBURG, MD — Residents and businesses in Gaithersburg will honor the life and legacy of civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 16.

As a federal holiday, MLK Day could also affect the hours of government offices, libraries, public transportation, garbage pickup and other services in Gaithersburg.

Gaithersburg On MLK Day

In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, most City of Gaithersburg facilities and offices will be closed on Monday, Jan. 16. Recycling will take place as scheduled. Bulk pick-up is unavailable. The regular mayor and City Council meeting will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 17.

The Aquatic Center will be open 5:15 to 8:30 p.m. with lap swimming from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. and recreational swim from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Gaithersburg Police Department Administrative Offices will be open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The Arts Barn will be open for two performances of Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 16 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Honoring Martin Luther King Jr. and the National Day of Service program, children and families will learn the value of volunteerism and helping all of those around us. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 day of the event, and $8 for youth ages 10 and under. Purchase tickets here.

Celebrate and honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a week of service, Jan. 16 to 23. Information on volunteer and donation opportunities can be found here.

Montgomery County and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Committee will be hosting the event "We are Martin," a tribute to the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. at The Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda on Monday, Jan. 16 at 4 p.m.

Here’s a roundup of what’s open and what’s closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Bethesda and across Montgomery County:

Montgomery County office buildings: Closed Monday, Jan. 16.

State offices and courts: Closed Monday, Jan. 16.

Montgomery County Schools: Closed Monday, Jan. 16

Post offices: Closed Monday, Jan. 16.

State Motor Vehicle Administration offices and Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program stations: Closed Monday, Jan. 16.

Libraries: Closed Sunday, Jan. 15 and Monday, Jan. 16.

Alcohol Beverage Services: All stores will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 16.

County-operated COVID-19 Vaccination and Testing Clinics: Clinics will operate on Saturday, Jan. 14 and Sunday, Jan. 15. They will be closed on Monday, Jan. 16.

Department of Permitting Services: All offices, including customer service lobby, are closed Monday, Jan. 16.

Ride On: Will operate on a holiday schedule on Monday, Jan. 16. All schedules can be found at Routes and Schedules.

Ride On extRa and Ride On Flex: Will operate on a holiday schedule.

Flash: Orange Line will operate on a holiday schedule, while the Blue Line will not operate on Monday, Jan. 16.

MARC Train and Commuter Bus: R schedule on all three lines on Monday, Jan. 16. Only trains with an "R" under the train number in the Camden and Penn Line timetables and Brunswick Line trains listed in the special grid on the right side of the timetable will operate. TRiPS Silver Spring commuter store: Open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 16.

TRiPS: Mobile Commuter Store: Closed Monday, Jan. 16.

Metrorail: On Monday, Jan. 16, Metrorail will run regular scheduled weekday service.

Metrobus: On Monday, Jan. 16, Metrobus will operate on a Saturday supplemental schedule.
Public Parking Garages, Lots, Curbside Meters: Free on Monday, Jan. 16.

County-provided trash and recycling: County-provided trash and recycling collections will be postponed on Monday, Jan. 16. Collections will slide one day later than usual throughout the week, with last pickup on Saturday, Jan. 21.

Shady Grove Transfer Station and Recycling Center: Closed Monday, Jan. 16.

Aquatic Centers: Will operate at normal hours on Monday, Jan. 16.

Community Recreation Centers: Closed Monday, Jan. 16.

Senior Centers: Closed Monday, Jan. 16.

The Open Parkways program will be extended during the MLK holiday weekend. During this time, parkways are open to pedestrians and bicyclists and closed to motor vehicles. Parkways impacted include:

  • Beach Drive between Connecticut and Knowles Avenue (2.9 miles). Saturday, Jan. 14 at 9 a.m. until Tuesday, Jan. 17 at 7 a.m.
  • Sligo Creek Parkway between Old Carroll Avenue and Piney Branch Road and between Forest Glen Road and University Boulevard West. Friday, Jan. 13 at 9 a.m. until Tuesday, Jan. 17 at 7 a.m.
  • Little Falls Parkway between Arlington Road and Dorset Avenue (0.4 miles). Open 24/7 for recreation and exercise.

Montgomery Parks Headquarters and Permits Offices: Closed Monday, Jan. 16.

Montgomery Parks Public Information and Customer Service Office: Closed Monday, Jan. 16.

Brookside Gardens Visitor Center and Conservatory: Closed Monday, Jan. 16. Gardens will remain open.
