Human Remains Found In Field Identified As Gaithersburg Man

Human remains found in a field in Germantown last month have been identified as a Gaithersburg man who was reported missing in July.

GERMANTOWN, MD — Human remains found in a field in Germantown last month have been identified as a Gaithersburg man who was reported missing to Montgomery County Police in July.

Police said the decedent has been identified as Michael Wayne Umberger, 57. Umberger was reported missing by his family on July 18, 2017 after he did not return home from Holy Cross Hospital in Germantown three days earlier.

A resident stumbled upon the human remains while walking in a field in the 12600 block of Great Seneca Hwy. Feb. 26.

An autopsy will be completed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore to determine the cause and manner of Umberger’s death. The autopsy findings are pending.
