Gazette: SHA to Upgrade Safety on Ritchie Highway

The State Highway Administration is working to make more than a dozen intersections along Ritchie Highway, many of them in Glen Burnie, safer for pedestrians, the Maryland Gazette reported.

The Maryland Gazette reported Wednesday that the State Highway Administration (SHA) is moving forward with plans to improve pedestrian safety at more than a dozen intersections along Ritchie Highway.

The SHA is working to upgrade intersections along Ritchie Highway from Baltimore City to Route 50 near Annapolis, the Gazette reported.

At least eight of those intersections are in Glen Burnie with four in Brooklyn Park, according to the Gazette.

that the number of pedestrians and bicyclists struck and killed by vehicles in the county had increased over the last year. According to statistics from Anne Arundel County Police, eight people have died this year after being hit by a vehicle while walking.

In Brooklyn Park, after being struck by a hit-and-run driver while riding his bicycle. they believe was driving the maroon sport utility vehicle.

Comparatively there were only seven fatalities in 2010, all pedestrians. In 2009 10 pedestrians died after being hit by a vehicle and one bicyclist died.
