GBHS Coaches Gear up for the Spring Season
Bruce Sider, athletic director at Glen Burnie High School, briefed parents on the ins and outs for student-athletes.
athletic director and baseball coach Bruce Sider and coaches of some of the school's spring sports teams gathered Wednesday, meeting with parents to go over the expectations of their student-athletes and give a glimpse into the upcoming season.
Softball head coach Doug Schreiber said he’s looking forward to kicking the season off.
“We have a good core of returning players and the nice addition of new young talent,” he said. “Some moved up from the [junior varsity] team and there are some freshmen.”

Schreiber said he believes the team will have a good chance to win in every game they play this season, with three returning all-county players in junior pitcher Melanie Slowinski and infielders Caitlyn Kirby, a sophomore, and Cara Woods, a senior.
“There are so many teams in Anne Arundel County that have a chance [to do well]. There are so many good teams for softball,” he said.

Sider echoed Schreiber, adding that the talent on many of the teams is strong.
“They’re all tough,” Sider said when asked if there was one team he was looking forward to playing this season. “There are no pushovers. This is probably the toughest county in the state for baseball.”
Sider said he is looking to his seven returning players to step into leadership roles this year.
“It’s just a matter of teaching them to lead,” he said.
Boys lacrosse head coach Aaron Courtney said he also is expecting his returning players to lead this season. Courtney said offensive players Tyler Napora, a junior, and senior Josh Mercurio, plus defensive players senior Andrew Spadaro, junior Brandon Eduvigen and senior goalie Chris Ford, all bring experience and leadership to the team.
“We’re just looking to come out, work hard, have some fun and grow as a team,” Courtney said, adding that he’s looking forward to games against and Southern high schools as a way to gauge the team’s potential.
All of the coaches said they are optimistic about what the season will bring.
“I always have high expectations. I expect to win the state championship,” Sider said. “That’s why I continue to coach.”
