Shortly before 11:30 a.m., a man was sitting in a Jeep contracted by the State Highway Administration (SHA) to perform speed enforcement on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway just before the Interstate 195 exit when the suspect emerged from a nearby wooded area, said Maryland State Police spokesman Greg Shipley.
The suspect is described as being a white man, age 50 to 60, about 5-feet-8-inches tall, weighing about 150 pounds, with white hair, no facial hair and wearing a blue and red shirt—possibly flannel—and blue jeans, Shipley said.
The man said the suspect approached the Jeep with a shotgun in one hand and a small hammer in the other and tapped the rear window with the shotgun while yelling incoherently, Shipley said. Police did not confirm reports of gunfire.
"Obviously, the [contract worker] became frightened and started to blow his horn," Shipley said.
The suspect then walked to the front of the Jeep and began to smash the windshield; at which time, the contract worker—described only as being an adult male—exited the vehicle and went to take cover behind the Jeep. Then, Shipley said, the suspect walked back into the wooded area.
The worker was not injured but the windshield on the Jeep was broken, Shipley said.
Officers from Anne Arundel County, Maryland State Police and Maryland Transportation Authority, as well as other agencies, are searching a large area near where the incident occurred. The Baltimore-Washington Parkway remains closed from the Baltimore Beltway to Route 100 and Shipley said it will remain closed but there are detours available.
"We want to reopen the roads as soon as possible, but we don't want any [drivers] passing through the area when the suspect might be in the vehicle," Shipley said.
Shipley said the wooded area near the place where the incident occurred did not appear to be accessible by cars but officers were searching the nearby office buildings, parking lots and stopping any suspicious vehicles.
The search is ongoing.
Updated 12:37 p.m. Wednesday: Anne Arundel County and Maryland State Police are searching for a man, who reportedly is armed, after he was spotted along Baltimore-Washington Parkway in the area of Interstate 195, police said. The Baltimore-Washington Parkway has been shut down in both directions.
As of this time, Route 295/Baltimore-Washington Parkway is still closed to BWI Marshall airport. Motorists are advised to use I-95 to 195 instead.
According to a Maryland State Police press release, calls came in shortly before 11:30 a.m. reporting a man armed with a long gun, possibly a shotgun or rifle, along the highway. Police said it is possible the man—described as being white and between 50 and 60 years old, wearing a black and red flannel shirt with blue jeans—may have used a hammer to break out windows of a vehicle parked along the highway.
Police said they are not sure if shots were fired but said that no one has been injured.
Officers are conducting a search for the man with K-9, helicopters and police on foot.
