Pedestrian Struck in Linthicum Dies

A Linthicum man died Monday night after stepping into a roadway and being struck by a vehicle, according to Anne Arundel County police.

Shortly before 5:15 p.m., Nelson Bert Lehnert, 77, stepped into a northbound lane of Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard and was struck by a Ford Explorer, according to police. He was reportedly outside of any nearby crosswalks or pedestrian control devices.

Paramedics transported Lehnert to University of Maryland Shock Trauma in Baltimore with what they believed to be "survivable injuries." But Lehnert's condition became worse at the hospital and he eventually died at 9 p.m. on Monday, police said.

Investigators say the Explorer, driven by an Edgewater man, was not able to avoid striking Lehnert. Police did not announce any charges against the driver.

Police said pedestrian error appears to be the primary factor, alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors in the collision, and investigation into the incident is ongoing.
