Police Chase Begins in Glen Burnie, Leads to Fatal Crash in Pasadena

A man who was speeding, driving erratically and refused to stop when spotted by a (MSP) trooper died after he lost control of hist truck and hit a tree late Wednesday afternoon in Pasadena, police said.

The driver, who has been only identified as a white adult man, was not the registered owner of the 1998 Dodge Dakota he was operating, but it is not believed to have been stolen, according to an MSP press release.

At about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, a trooper saw the Dakota swerving back and forth within a travel lane as he sat on the shoulder of southbound Route 10 just south of Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard in Glen Burnie. The truck was clocked at 82 mph in a 55 mph zone.

After the driver saw the trooper, police said he pulled into the slow lane closer to the trooper and continued to swerve his truck, losing control and spinning 360 degrees. The trooper turned on the emergency lights on his marked cruiser and pulled up to the truck that was stopped in the fast lane. The driver immediately sped away from the trooper and the trooper then turned on his siren.

The driver did not stop and took eastbound Route 100 and passed cars while driving on the median. After swerving across both lanes of eastbound traffic on Route 100, the truck hit a guardrail, drove up a slight embankment and turned onto its left side before the roof of the truck hit a tree that was about 20 feet from the road, police said.

The Anne Arundel County Fire Department and EMS responded to Route 100 eastbound near Catherine Avenue, where the driver was pronounced dead. The driver has been taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy.

One lane of Route 100 was closed during the crash investigation and reopened shortly after 9 p.m.

Investigation into the crash is continuing and is being conducted by advanced accident reconstructionists on the Maryland State Police CRASH Team. A motive for the driver's behavior has not yet been established.
