STEM Students Sling Melons in Glen Burnie

Students in Anne Arundel County schools Bridge Program participated in a melon-launching competition on Thursday.

Students in the Anne Arundel County schools Bridge Program are starting off their high school lives with a smash.

Future STEM students, heading into ninth grade in the fall, showed their budding engineering skills in a head-on melon launching competition.

Students from the STEM programs at North County and South River High School built medieval-style trebuchets--which are catapults that use a chain or rope for extra force.

Several of the melons flew around 100 feet, and in the end, the South River team won with the longest sling.

Watch the video above for the launches--some successful, some not.
