Most Dangerous Places in Maryland Include Three Prince George's Communities

Based on crime data, a list was compiled of the top dangerous places in the state.

Three locations in Prince George’s County ranked on a list of “The 10 Most Dangerous Places in Maryland.”

Real estate business Movoto collected 2012 FBI crime data for 34 Maryland communities with at least 5,000 people.

Crimes were split into four categories: murders, violent crimes, property crimes, and total crimes. Each category held 30 percent of the score except for total crimes that made up 10 percent.

According to the data analysis, the following places in Prince George’s County were ranked on The 10 Most Dangerous Places in Maryland:

#3 Bladensburg:

  • Highest vehicle thefts: 1,041 per 100,000 people
  • Locals had a 1 in 17 chance of being the victim of a crime
  • In 2012, it was ranked #3 most dangerous in the murders category

#8 Mount Rainier:

  • Most common crime: robberies
  • Locals had a 1 in 24 chance of being the victim of a crime
  • In 2012, there were 12 murders per 100,000 people - ranked #7 in that category

#9 Hyattsville:

  • Fifth highest total crime
  • Second most property crimes: 5,439 thefts per 100,000 people
  • No murders were reported in this area in 2012

Only the 34 places in Maryland that provided report data were taken into account for this ranking. The crime data consisted of the number of:

  • Murders
  • Rapes
  • Robberies
  • Assaults
  • Burglaries
  • Thefts
  • Vehicle thefts
  • Violent crimes
  • Property crimes
  • Total crimes
