Winter Weather Dress & Travel Tips and Illness Prevention

The dangerously cold temperatures hitting the Bowie area and Prince George's County call for winter weather reminders.

With temperatures reaching the 20s and even teens, hypothermia and frostbite are a dangerous possibility for residents in Prince George’s County if the proper precautions aren’t taken.

In order to stay safe as the wind chill makes temperatures feel even lower, following the tips below and do not overexpose your skin to the cold.

Clothing tips:

  • Dress in layers
  • Keep a hat, scarf, and gloves with you
  • Wear water repellent clothing and change clothes when wet

Traveling tips:

  • Always have a mobile phone with you
  • Keep the gas tank full
  • Pack an emergency kit with blankets, food, first aid supplies, etc.
  • If you become stranded, keep your arms and legs moving to avoid frostbite

Cold weather illness symptoms:

  • Uncontrollable shivering
  • Pale and cold skin
  • Confusion, slurred speech, or sleepiness
  • Shallow breathing
  • Stiff limbs, numbness, or change of skin color

If symptoms continue, contact a doctor or the police.
