Havre De Grace Celebrates Arbor Day With Native Tree Plantings

Volunteers and leaders in Havre de Grace spent April 18 planting more than 100 native trees in town for Arbor Day.

HAVRE DE GRACE, MD — For the 26th year, the city of Havre de Grace has planted trees in honor of Arbor Day.

This year, they planted three native trees - red bud, black gum and hornbeam - along the north side of the Water Street project. An estimated 3,000 plants also have been planted along the waterfront to date, officials said.

Approximately 130 trees also were planted at Chapel Road Park for Arbor Day. Since the celebrations began in 2003, Harford County leaders have planted more than 33,000 native trees, including red maple, tulip poplar, white oak, black walnut, eastern red cedar and redbud. The April 18th plantings included the presentation of the Arbor Day Foundation’s National Arbor Day Tree City USA Award to Harford County government. The award, which Harford will be presented for the 22nd time, recognizes the work of elected officials, staff and citizens who plant and care for the community forest, benefiting the environment and the economy.
