Darlington Fish Lift Begins Season

The lift gets fish over the massive Conowingo Dam.

For more than 20 years, the fish lift atop the Conowingo Dam has been helping scaled wildlife up and over the structure.

This week, the lift began its heavy spring season, WJZ reports. The dam's general manager told the station the lift moved 1.1 million fish in 2012 several stories above the Susquehanna River.

The lift, installed in 1991,releases water from the top of the dam, creating an artificial current that attracts fish.

WJZ repotts a particular target of the lift is the American Shad. Biologists catch shad at Conowingo and inject them with hormones to speed production, according to the report.

The lift was turned on for the season on April 1, and has seen 11,134 fish pass through since then, according to statistics kept by the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission.
