Tuesday Is Final Day To File For May Election

Questions remain as the hours tick down.

Will the remaining incumbents run to regain their City Council seats? Are there any surprise newcomers waiting until the last minute? Will a third person join the mayor's race?

The deadline to file to run in the May 7 election is the end of business Tuesday. If no other city council candidates come forward, the three candidates who filed will walk into their new roles in May.

So far, the following candidates have submitted applications to run in the election:

City Council

• Tom Barnes
• Randy Craig
• Fred Cullum

Mayor

• Wayne Dougherty
• Jim Miller

The mayor's office and three council seats are up for grabs. Dougherty and Craig are incumbents, while Miller and Cullum are former council members. Barnes is a newcomer to Havre de Grace politics.

Other incumbent council members Barbara Wagner and John Correri had not declared their intentions as of Monday night. Wagner declined to comment following Monday's City Council meeting, while Correri was not in attendance at the meeting.

Interested parties should visit City Hall before 5 p.m. Tuesday to file paperwork.

Elected officials serve two-year terms with elections every spring. Three council members are up on a rotating basis. Current council members Bill Martin, Dave Glenn and Joe Smith were voted into office last May. Wagner, Correri, Craig and Dougherty were elected in May 2011.

Dougherty ran uncontested to regain his seat as mayor in 2009, but uncontested races for City Council have been rare in Havre de Grace.
