Weekend Roadwork Means Delays at Dam

Road work on U.S. Route 1 at the Conowingo Dam was slated for two May weekends.

Roadwork is causing significant delays on U.S. Route 1 at the  this weekend.

The Maryland State Highway Administration is paving lanes on the bridge deck. This period of road work should be complete by 6 a.m. on Monday.

"There are delays in each direction of US 1 at the Conowingo Dam due to construction. There is a flagging operation in effect. We recommend motorists to use I-95 or US 40 as alternates," SHA spokesman Charlie Gischlar told Patch in an email.

Roadwork is being confined to the weekends.

Aside from the , the Tydings Bridge (Interstate 95) and Hatem Bridge (U.S. Route 40) are the only alternate routes to cross the  south of the Mason Dixon Line. Both bridges have tolls heading north, but are free to motorists heading south.

The paving on southbound Route 1 is to be complete by the end of May.

Motorists should be on the lookout for flag operations as well as message signs to direct traffic.

Northbound lanes will be shut down in similar fashion next month with the goal of having both lanes completed by June 30.

The $1.2 million patching and resurfacing project is being handled by PDI Sheetz of Linthicum Heights, according to the SHA.
