HAVRE DE GRACE, MD — The Havre de Grace Youth Sailing Program is enrolling campers for the 2022 season, and leaders encourage those who want to sign up to do so soon.

"We are not full but we are getting there," organizers said Friday, April 1, after posting an April fool's joke that the camp was at capacity.

More than 130 people had signed up as of mid-March, Havre de Grace Youth Sailing President Rick Wahl told the City Council. Last year, he said there were 183 campers.

The Havre de Grace Youth Sailing Program is capping enrollment at 200 this summer, Wahl told the council at its March 21 meeting.

"It will be our fifth season of putting kids on boats here in Havre de Grace and teaching them how to be safe on the water," Wahl said.

"It's definitely caught on," Wahl said. "Our camp is one of the things that kids want to do in the summertime, and we want to make sure that it's there this year again."

Camp will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. from June 20 to Aug. 20 at Hutchins Park.

Setup will occur on June 18, according to Steve Gamatoria, chief of staff for the city of Havre de Grace.

The council unanimously approved the request by the Havre de Grace Youth Sailing Program to operate this summer, using Frank J. Hutchins Memorial Park and its restrooms for the camp.

Children must be 7 to 18 years old to attend. Here is information on registration. Payment is due by May 1.
