Suspected Scammer ID'd But Still On The Loose: Sheriff

The Harford Co. Sheriff's Office has identified the man suspected of scamming an elderly resident but the man remains on the loose.

HARFORD COUNTY, MD — The person involved in a scam that targeted a Bel Air resident has been identified, but still is being sought by the Harford County Sheriff's Office.

According to the Harford County Sheriff's Office, on July 20, "an elderly female was pressured to have her driveway repaired after an unknown male solicitor showed up unexpectedly and offered to fix the cracks."

When the homeowner declined the service, the man became aggressive, the sheriff's office said, and demanded she allow him to make repairs.

Johnson is 56 and has been charged with posing as a contractor without a license/no bond, the sheriff's office stated.

"Please remember to always verify someone’s identity when they claim to represent or work for a business or public utility company such as BGE. If something doesn’t feel right, it most likely means it’s a scam. Trust your gut and give us a call to report any suspicious activity," the sheriff's office stated. "The victim was alone and nervous, and the subject continued to pressure the victim relentlessly. She reluctantly agreed to the cost he proposed; however, after the repairs were completed, he demanded that she pay significantly more than what they had initially agreed. This scam forces victims to overpay under pressure. Legitimate companies may solicit business from you unexpectedly; however, none will demand that you allow them to complete work immediately and demand payment. If this happens to you, please call us."

The sheriff's office asks that anyone who sees Johnson contact the Northern Precinct at 410-692-7880. They also ask that residents talk to family and friends who could be potential victims of a high-pressure scam like this one.
