Maryland Grand National Celebrates 110th Running

Steeplechase season continues at the much-anticipated Maryland Grand National.

The race is the second jewel in the state's steeplechase triple crown.

Private Attack will return to defend its title in the namesake race, according to the National Steeplechase Association website. Jockey Blythe Miller Davies rode the horse, who was also the 2011 Maryland Hunt Cup winner, to a in last year's race . But Twill Do, the 2010 Hunt Cup winner, may make it difficult for the reigning champ.

The 110th running of the race, which has a $30,000 purse, posts at 3:15 p.m., according to the Maryland Steeplechasing website. But gates will open at 11:30 a.m. at 2838 Butler Rd. in Reisterstown.

The $15,000 Benjamin H. Murray Memorial and the $5,000 Amateur Apprentice races will follow.

Residents considering attending the race should keep in mind that the National Weather Service is predicting showers and thunderstorms during the event Saturday.
