Five Things You Need To Know Today (The Hy-Five)

About PTSA elections, PANorama winners and tonight's swearing in ceremony at Hyattsville's City Hall.

Hope you had a great weekend, Hyattsville! Here are five things you need to know today:

 

1. Mayor William Gardiner will convene his last Hyattsville City Council Meeting tonight and pass the gavel to Mayor-elect Marc Tartaro. The meeting starts at 8 p.m. or you can watch it on Comcast Channel 71, Verizon 12. Newly elected council members Candace Hollingsworth (Ward 1) and Shani Warner (Ward 2) will also be sworn in.

2. Patch is thinking rain slickers and galoshes for today. With a chance of showers, then showers likely and maybe even a thunderstorm after noon, you’ll probably want to be covered up. As for temps, the National Weather Service says it should be mostly cloudy, with a high near 73. Later in the day it’s even more likely that the sky will tear open so if you might want to rethink dinner on the lanai tonight.

3. If you heard about the fire at Franklin’s on Saturday night you know the restaurant was shut down for a day. It’s open now so if you want to find a respite from today’s rain you might want to hit the store for some fun Father’s Day gag gifts. Here are their hours:

  • Monday: 11 a.m.-9 p.m.
  • Tuesday-Thursday: 11 a.m.-9:30 p.m.
  • Friday: 11 a.m.-10 p.m.
  • Saturday: 10 a.m.-9:30 p.m.
  • Sunday: 10 a.m.-8 p.m.

4. The Rhythm Runners from the Cultural Academy for Excellence (CAFÉ) won first prize at the PANorama Caribbean Music Festival in Virginia Beach last week. CAFÉ is based at First United Methodist Church of Hyattsville.

5. The Northwestern High School PTSA is having its general meeting and elections for the 2011-2012 school year at 10 a.m. on May 21. That’s this coming Saturday. The meeting will be held in the school cafeteria. Check out this ballot to see who’s running.
