Trophies In The Closet: Hyattsville's DeMatha High Written Up In New York Times

After years of building a stellar nation-wide reputation in sports, the school's music department is finally being discovered outside of the educational realm.

So it's apparently true, all those stories about skeletons in closets.

At least it's true at . And OK, it's accolades not skeletons, but I bet some of them were hidden deep inside some dark, musty closets until the new music building at the Hyattsville campus was built a couple years ago.

In fact, it landed the all-boys school the top spot on the sports page of the New York Times's website on May 10.

John Mitchell, who founded DeMatha's music program in 1970, now oversees 400 students, 15 ensembles and 4 other staffers, the article states. Mitchell is retiring this year. His final stint conducting for the school is May 12 at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at the University of Maryland.
