Police: Rainey Admits to Involvement in West Laurel Killings

The 59-year-old is accused of fatally shooting his wife and stepdaughter in their home.

Ronnie Lee Rainey, the 59-year-old man accused of shooting his wife and stepdaughter to death Monday in their West Laurel home, has admitted to his involvement in the killings, Prince George's County police said Tuesday.

Rainey has been charged with two counts of murder and two counts of first degree assault, police said. He is being held in custody on a no-bond status.

According to police, Rainey killed Lisa Renee Rainey, 50—his wife—and Ariale Chantre Shelton, 27—his stepdaughter—Monday morning at their house in 16100 block of Malcolm Drive.

Rainey then called 911 himself, police said, telling authorities that he had killed his family and threatening to kill himself.

Negotiators were able to coax Rainey out of the home unarmed and take him into custody. When police entered the home, they reportedly found the bodies of Ms. Rainey and Shelton on the first floor.

Police said Rainey had also fired in the direction of his teenage son, but that his son had managed to escape from the home without being harmed. A second unidentified man also fled from the gunfire.

In addition to murder charges, Rainey was initially charged with two counts of attempted murder. PGPD spokeswoman Julie Parker said the latter two charges were later lowered to first degree assault.
