Armed Bank Robbery Suspect Identified, Arrested: Police

A Frederick man was arrested for the armed robbery​ of a Montgomery County bank Friday afternoon.

DAMASCUS, MD — A Frederick man was arrested for armed robbery of the M&T Bank in Damascus Friday afternoon.

Police said Benjamin Hansberger, 28, demanded money from the teller and said he had a gun. Hansberger received an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the bank at about 2 p.m.

Police received information that Hansberger and two other people fled in a vehicle. Howard County and Montgomery County Police officers located the car in the 12400 block of Clarksville Pike at about 2:30 p.m.

All three people in the vehicle, including Hansberger, were detained, police said. Hansberger matched the description of the bank robbery suspect and was wearing clothing that appeared to be worn by the suspect in the bank surveillance video, police said.

Police searched the vehicle and located a large amount of cash and clothing Hansberger wore during the robbery.

Hansberger was charged with robbery and armed robbery and is being held at the Montgomery County Detention facility without bail. The other two individuals were not charged pending further investigation, police said.
