Crews To Climb 36,000 Wooden Poles Around Baltimore

Keep an eye out for people climbing poles in your neighbhood. Don’t worry—it’s planned.

In an effort to reduce power outages and keep up with utilities, Baltimore Gas and Electric plans plans to spend more than $15 million to inspect, maintain and replace utility poles in parts of the Baltimore region.

BGE said it intends to check the condition of more than 36,000 wooden poles in and around Baltimore and Baltimore County.

The utility poles will be treated to protect against insects, and nearly 1,800 will be replaced. In 2012, BGE spent about $11 million and replaced more than 1,200 poles in parts of Baltimore, Baltimore County, Carroll County and Harford County, the Baltimore Sun reported.

Utility pole conditions can play a role in power outages, according to the company.
