Newby, a four-star prospect ranked 19th nationally at his position, has received 11 scholarship offers from Division I programs including Maryland, Virginia Tech, Ohio State, Penn State, and Nebraska ().
"Marcus does pretty much everything well; he's one of the best players I've coached," Mencarini told Rivals. "What Marcus brings to this program is an energy I have not seen in all my years of coaching. He is the most passionate and most aggressive football player that I've been around."

Tyrell Williams (fullback/linebacker) and Kieran Gregory (tight end, defensive end, linebacker) join Newby as players projected by Rivals to play Division I.
The recruiting website labels linebacker Carlo St. Regis as a potential Division I-AA player, and Matt Choi (wide receiver), Austin Trach (left tackle), Spencer Trach (center), and Andrew Ankrah (defensive end) as players who could play either Division I-AA or Division II.
