Arundel High Student in Running for State Board Seat

An Arundel High School student is one of five students vying for a seat on the Maryland State Board of Education.

Christian Hodges, a junior at Arundel, has been a named a semifinalist for a board seat along with two other students from Anne Arundel County. 

Hodges was selected following an interview process involving fellow students and one adult. 

There will be an election on Jan. 26 to determine the two finalists for the board, and Gov. Martin O'Malley will make the final selection. 

Students from Montgomery County and Howard County were also among the semifinalists. 

Student members of the state board have limited voting rights. This is the first time since 2005 that Anne Arundel County has had a semifinalist. 

Hodges currently represents the mid-Atlantic region for the National Association of Student Councils. He is also a vice president with the Chesapeake Regional Association of Student Councils.

The five candidates seeking a seat on the Maryland State Board of Education are: 

• Christian Hodges, Arundel High School
• Kevin Adams, Glen Burnie High School
• Evan Elsmo, Annapolis High School
• Benjamin Feshbach, Thomas Wooten High School (Montgomery County)
• Amal Hassan, Long Reach High School (Howard County)
