Casino Revenues Rise 44 Percent in a Year

Table games helped boost revenue to nearly $70 million. Maryland Live! and Perryville both saw gains.

Casinos in Maryland reported more than $69 million in revenue during the month of July, an increase of more than 44 percent over the same month a year ago. 

The addition of table games at two casinos, plus revenue from the new Rocky Gap casino in Allegany County, helped push revenue to an all-time high in the state.  

The Hollywood Casino in Perryville and Casino at Ocean Downs in Worcester County also saw higher levels of gambling revenue during the year.

At Maryland Live!, slots revenue came in at just over $35 million, a slight increase over July of 2012. Meanwhile, revenue from the 122 live table games at Maryland Live! in July was $17.49 million. Maryland Live! added table games in April. 

Hollywood Casino saw revenue grow $625,337, or 9 percent during the year. It reported $1.24 million in table game revenue. The casino added table games in March.

Rocky Gap reported $3.4 million from slot machines and table games in July. 

A significant portion of revenue from casinos in the state is redistributed to suport education, local business and the racetrack industry. 

Here’s the breakdown of distribution for July of 2013:

  • Casino operators: $33 million ($17.6 million from slots, $15.3 million from table games)
  • Education Trust Fund: $27.7 million ($23.9 million from slots, $3.8 million from table games)
  • Horse racing purses: $3.70 million from slots
  • Local impact grants: $2.67 million from slots
  • Racetrack renewal: $823,661 from slots
  • Maryland Lottery: $1 million from slots
  • Small, minority and women-owned business: $728,789 from slots
