Cocaine, Fentanyl Sold By Severn Man In DC Prompts Prison Time

A Severn man sold $31,000 in cocaine and fentanyl in Washington, D.C., prosecutors said. He was sentenced to prison.

SEVERN, MD — A Severn man accused of selling $31,000 in cocaine and fentanyl to a confidential informant in Washington, D.C. was sentenced to prison recently, prosecutors said.

U.S. District Court Judge Dabney L. Friedrich on Thursday sentenced Derek Gaines, 37, to 65 months in federal prison followed by four years of supervised release, the Department of Justice said.

The DOJ said Gaines pleaded guilty on Dec. 5, 2024, to unlawful distribution of 40 or more grams of fentanyl.

Prosecutors said Gaines sold over 100 grams of cocaine and over 300 grams of fentanyl split between three transactions to a confidential informant for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

The transactions took place in spring and summer 2024 in the 1600 block of Maryland Avenue NE, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Edward R. Martin Jr. said.

The U.S. attorney said police arrested Gaines in Severn on Aug. 29, 2024.
