Community Reaches out to Fort Meade Fire Victims

Four families were displaced by the fire on the installation Sunday. Neighbors have come through with donations.

The greater Fort Meade community has reached out to help several families displaced by a recent fire on the installation. 

Four families are receiving help from the Red Cross and USO, and neighbors have come through by collecting clothing and household goods.

The fire on Sunday was reportedly triggered by a lightning strike, and impacted several homes in the Potomac Place neighborhood on Fort Meade.

The Capital-Gazette reported that one neighbor had collected a trailer of items, including beds for most of the children.

There's also a Facebook page, Fire Families of New Potomac Fort Meade, Md. The page has offered frequent updates on the families needs.

Neighbors are also encouraging donations to Wish For Our Heroes, a non-profit that works on behalf of military families in need. Anyone can donate $10 to the group by texting AMERICA to 20222.

For the time being, all donations will go directly to the families in need at Fort Meade.
