Finding Frogs and Reptiles in Odenton

Volunteers recently trudged through a wooded area of Odenton to help catalog Maryland's amphibians and reptiles.

A group of volunteers is scanning the state in search of reptiles and amphibians, and recently found a wealth of species in Odenton.

Capital News Service reporter Brandon Goldner followed some volunteers as they trudged through a wooded area of Piney Orchard, flipping over logs and raking through leaves to find salamanders, frogs, toads and other creatures.

The search was part of a five-year effort to build the Maryland Reptile and Amphibian Atlas. The project is expected to wrap up in December of 2014.

Anyone can take part in building the atlas by going on coordinated searches or just snapping photos of any reptiles or amphibians they see. For more information, go to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources website.
