Football: Arundel Crushes Old Mill to Stay Unbeaten

In the waning seconds of the first half on Friday night, the Arundel High Wildcats trailied the Old Mill Patriots, but had one last chance to score. 

They turned to a play that they had practiced nearly everyday—a classic hook and ladder. 

Wideout Tyler Young took a quick pass from Jack Gordon and then lateraled the ball to Dillon Tighe, who scampered in for the go-ahead score. 

The Wildcats (6-0) went into halftime up 32-27 and never looked back, smashing the defending state champions 66-34. 

"I think that kind of changed the momentum of the game a little bit," Arundel head coach Chuck Markiewicz said. "We've had it in our playbook for a long time, but just haven't had a chance to use it."

Despite trailing for most of the first half, Arundel stormed back and put its high-octane offense on display. Gordon threw for 385 yards, hooking up with Tyler Young 11 times in the game. Young finished with an eye-popping 271 receiving yards and 4 touchdowns. 

Old Mill led 27-13 in the second quarter after ripping off several big plays, including a 78-yard pass from Brady Ludwig to Raykwon Young, a 55-yard pass to Marcus Hicks and a 33-yard run by Shawn Brown. 

Arundel got back into the game on a sparkling 18-yard touchdown reception from Aaron Lewis-Cenales, then a 66-yard touchdown pass to Young. The Wildcats then trailed 27-25, before pulling off the hook-and-ladder play at the end of the half. 

The Wildcats proceeded to outscore the Patriots 34-7 in the second half. 

"I think we kind of grew up a little bit tonight," Markiewicz said. 

Notes: Old Mill's loss snapped a 19-game winning streak...Old Mill quarterback Brady Ludwig completed just eight passes, but for 347 yards—an average of more than 43 yards per completion...Matt Davis had 95 rushing yards for Arundel...Kwame Kumah had 10 tackles and a sack for Arundel...Old Mill next plays at Annapolis on Friday...Arundel hosts Broadneck.
