Former Resident Returns as National PTA President to Discuss Parent Involvement in Education

The event takes place Thursday night and will hear from National PTA president elect, Otha Thornton, previously the president of the Meade High School PTSA.

is set to host a high school parent involvement roundtable event Thursday night to discuss the importance of being involved in a child’s education.

Starting at 6:30 p.m. at the mammoth-sized campus in Millersville, Parent Teacher Associations from Old Mill, Meade and Chesapeake high school will gather to share ideas and hear from a local father who now heads the National PTA.

Otha Thornton, a former president of the Meade PTSA, is now the president-elect of the National PTA and brings his passion and excitement back to Maryland to spark the next generation of passionately engaged parents.

Following Thornton’s presentation to the parents, breakout sessions will take place that include:

  • High school parent involvement: How is it different from the elementary level?
  • What’s the biggest challenge to high school involvement?
  • Fundraising and communication ideas.
  • How to reach out to under-represented groups.

Refreshments will be presented by Sylvan Learning Centers. Parents hoping to get involved should contact Lisa Shore (lisashore@verizon.net) of the Old Mill PTSA.
