Man Seeks Stories About 'Worst Fire Day'
A Linthicum man recalls a day in 1963 when fires hit up and down the east coast. The area near Gambrills Road and Route 3 was particularly hard hit.

About fifty years ago, severe weather sparked a series of severe fires up and own the East coast.
One man in Anne Arundel County is looking to chronicle memories of the fires, which hit some sections of this area hard on April 20, 1963. According to a letter to the Capital-Gazette, Joe Ross of Linthicum recalls how one fire wreaked havoc in the Gambrills area.
The most destructive fire that day started on Gambrills Road around 10 a.m, near the power transmission lines, north of Route 175. Forced by high and gusty winds, the fire burned east, jumping both lanes of Route 3 near Dorr's Corner around noon, and was finally under control near Arden on the Severn in the early evening.
