Maxwell Resigns; Board to Hold Emergency Session Saturday

The board will discuss the process of naming an interim superintendent as Maxwell prepares for his new position with Prince George's County Public Schools.

The Anne Arundel County Board of Education said it will hold an emergency session Saturday morning, after Superintendent Kevin Maxwell submitted his resignation.

Maxwell formally stepped down from his post Thursday after it was announced that he will take over as CEO of Prince George's County Schools.

The school board will meet Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in a closed-door session to discuss the process of naming an interim superintendent.

In his resignation letter to the board, Maxwell said serving nine years as superintendent in Anne Arundel County was "an honor and a pleasure," and touted the system's progress in increasing student scholarships and encouraging more rigor in classrooms.

"I want this Board to know clearly and unequivocally that I am incredibly proud of the work we have done together in Anne Arundel County," he wrote. "We have vastly increased access to courses of rigor and relevance for all of our children, and have seen huge gains in the number of students from traditionally underrepresented groups who are taking advanced level courses. We have created unprecedented opportunities and pathways for success, and are preparing our students today for jobs that have yet to be contemplated or created."

Maxwell also wrote a letter address to parents, students and school employees, in which he outlined his motivation to return to the school district where he began his career.

Maxwell, a Bowie resident, started out as a teacher in Prince George's County and spent more than 22 years there, ascending to administrative roles before leaving for positions in Montgomery and Anne Arundel counties.

"The opportunity to lead Prince George’s County Public Schools, however, brings my career full circle," Maxwell wrote.

He will be formally introduced as  the new Chief Executive Officer of Prince George's County Schools Friday in Hyattsville.

Maxwell and the Anne Arundel County Board of Education will now work to agree on an official departure date.
