Roundabout Monument Smashed Again

Another motorist drove through the monument of the traffic circle on Piney Orchard. This is at least the third such incident in the last two years.

UPDATED: (Thursday, 10:30 a.m.) —Once again, the roundabout monument on Piney Orchard Parkway has been damaged by a driver gone awry.

Anne Arundel County police spokesman Justin Mulcahy said the driver of a Mercury Mountaineer struck the monument shortly after 1 a.m. Wednesday.

The monument was heavily damaged, with the entire top part of the monument knocked over. Landscaping on the traffic circle was also damaged along with the curb on the north side. Tire tracks were also visible in the mud surrounding the monument.

A full traffic report on the incident was not yet available, Mulcahy said.

Piney Orchard Community Association President Jeff Andrade said he was also awaiting the police report, but that repair workers had already examined the damage.

This incident comes after the curb on the roundabout was damaged in August by a driver who police said may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

The monument was also heavily damaged in February of 2011 after a young woman drove through it in her car, according to police.
