Police Officer's Odenton Home Catches Fire

Ammunition reportedly went off at the home owned by a Washington, D.C., police officer.

Anne Arundel County firefighters have declared an Odenton home a total loss after a fire started early Wednesday morning.

Firefighters arrived at the home located in the 400 block of Monterey Avenue at 4 a.m., according to WUSA9. A neighbor had called 911 at 3:50 a.m. after seeing the blaze.

The home is owned by a Washington, D.C., police officer, according to WJZ. The officer’s wife, daughter and retired service dog were inside the home at the time of the fire and made it out safely. But two other dogs were lost in the fire.

Firefighters heard shots go off in the fire, according to the news outlet. The police officer had ammunition stored inside the home.

Members of the Fire and Explosives Investigation Unit have determined fire was an accident, and caused by the improper disposal of smoking materials. Damage is estimated at $275,000.

No other injuries were reported, and investigation for the cause of the blaze is ongoing.
