Severn BMX Track Preps for National Races

The East Coast Nationals on June 14-16 will bring hundreds of top riders for three days of competition

The Chesapeake BMX track in Severn will attract hundreds of the top bike riders next weekend for three days of elite competition.

From June 14-16, the non-profit track at Severn-Danza Park will host the East Coast Nationals, one of the top events in the USA BMX circuit.

It's one of the largest events that Chesapeake BMX has ever hosted, and organizers said it could be the largest revenue-producer as well.

"If we don't get it, I bet we will be at least close to having riders from all 50 states," said track director Doug O'Connor. "Realistically, it will be our biggest fundraiser of the year."

O'Connor said there could be as many as 190 races over the three days, bringing upwards of 800 riders. Typically, Chesapeake BMX hosts more local races with roughly 120 riders a weekend.

O'Connor, who works as a computer programmer by day, has been working in recent days with other volunteers to prepare the facility by laying down new dirt and applying adhesive to keep it intact.

The work comes after the 1,185-foot track was completely rebuilt last year, and operators also recently upgraded the facility's snack bar and registration shed. It also acquired bleachers for free from the Naval Academy. In all, operators said they've pumped in $10,000 in improvements, and hope to get some of that money back from the East Coast Nationals.

Chesapeake BMX attracts riders of all ages, from 2-year-olds on special pedalless "Strider" bikes, to one man who recently turned 80. A year membership to the facility costs $55, though you can get a 30-day membership for $25 to test it out.

The facility typically holds events on weekends, but also has open practices on Wednesday nights for $3.

Chesapeake BMX last hosted a national race in 2010 and has bid to host it again in 2015.

The East Coast Nationals will feature a pre-race competition on June 14, with higher point races on Saturday and Sunday. Parking costs $10 per day or $25 for the weekend.
