Weather Alert from Anne Arundel County Public Schools

The school system sent out a message as a winter weather advisory is issued for the area.

As a mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain moves into the area, Anne Arundel County Public Schools has canceled all Friday after-school activities and activities scheduled for this weekend.

The cancellation includes the SAT exams scheduled to take place in county high schools on Saturday, Jan. 24. The exam will be rescheduled for a later time.

For the status of activities sponsored by agencies other than Anne Arundel County Public Schools, including after-school day care, parents should check with that agency.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the area until noon on Saturday. The forecast says:

Ice accumulations from a trace to a few hundredths of an inch. Snow accumulations of one to three inches north and west of the Interstate 95 corridor to the Mason-Dixon line. Snow accumulations of one inch or less across much of the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area.

Precipitation will begin as a wintry mix of snow and sleet this evening. Snow will continue across portions of Northern Maryland and extreme Northern portions of the West Virginia panhandle and Northern Virginia. Freezing rain will become more widespread overnight, continuing into early Saturday morning before tapering off late Saturday morning.

Roads and sidewalks that are untreated will become slippering, causing the potential for hazardous traveling conditions.
