West County Stocks Up for Sandy

With Hurricane Sandy coming up the east coast, residents of West Anne Arundel County began stocking up with essentials on Friday. 

Local supermarkets including Safeway and Giant in Gambrills were crowded, with many shoppers pushing carts filled with bottled water, milk and other staples. 

The Walmart in Severn and Target in Gambrills were also crowded with people stocking up on flashlights and batteries. 

The Gambrills General Store said it hopes to be open through the weekend, with firewood, generators and propane for sale, along with food for livestock and other animals. The store has a fall festival open house planned from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Honda Powersports of Crofton is expecting shipments of generators on Saturday and Sunday morning. There were several models available and ranged in price from about $1,200 to $5,000, depending on capacity. 

The Stone Store in Hanover is currently taking orders for sandbags. Call 410-766-4242, and staff there will prepare the bags for pickup.

• Odenton ACE Hardware was sold out of generators, but could have a new shipment Monday. Other essentials including batteries, power cords and flashlights were in stock. 
• Lowe's in Severn has supplies including flashlights, batteries and lumber. 
• Wegmans will not open for business until Sunday at 7 a.m., and it's expected to be very crowded. However, if you need last-minute food and drink, there will be items in stock. The store plans to have 29 registers open Sunday morning.
