In years past, the two organizations hosted separate National Night Out events.

The combined event will take place from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Aug. 6 at Chartley Park Center, Chartley Drive, Reisterstown, and is free to the public. The first 300 visitors will receive free chicken nuggets and there will be other free treats including snowballs.

The Baltimore County Fire Department will be on hand to host emergency response vehicle and equipment demonstrations.

The family-oriented event will also feature safety-related games and displays in home security, emergency preparedness, health and environmental programs.

Baltimore Gas and Electric will host a high-voltage demonstration in which high-voltage wires are touched to different objects.

The National Night Out campaign was designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and to send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

The event was started in 1984 by the National Association of Town Watch, a nonprofit dedicated to crime prevention, according to The Carroll County Times.

Civic groups, neighborhood associations and local officials host national Night Out events each year throughout the country.
