ESSEX, MD — A waterfront restaurant is opening a mini golf course, further expanding amenities at a marina already known for its recreational offerings.

Charly's Waterfront, located at the Baltimore Boating Center at 2015 Turkey Point Road, will unveil its nine-hole course on June 1. The putt putt course overlooking Sue Creek is dubbed Charly's Back 9. The links will cover part of the gravel parking lot at the restaurant, which opened in 2022.

Each hole will have sponsors and activations, the Baltimore Business Journal reported.

“Our community here is very strong, and we really feel like we are a part of it,” Charly's Co-owner Ryan Perlberg told The Baltimore Sun. “We are 20 minutes from downtown, have plenty of parking, as well as transient slips. [We are] family- and dog-friendly.”

The expansion comes amid a changing dock bar scene in Eastern Baltimore County. LoonAsea opened in June 2024 in Essex, replacing River Watch Restaurant & Marina. LoonAsea's neighbor, The Crazy Tuna Bar & Grill, closed last October. Sunset Cove shuttered its Middle River eatery this April.

The Business Journal said Charly's has a new menu with items tested throughout the winter, including healthier options like tuna poke. There's also a new menu for dogs with dishes like chicken and rice, the BBJ said.

"So many incredible faces have been coming through and supporting our restaurant and marina," Charly's said Monday on Facebook. "We have a lot of updates, parking improvements and expansion projects ready to launch so stay tuned. It's been a journey."

The BBJ said Perlberg also owns Stuggy's and the Rye cocktail Bar in Fells Point.
