Traffic Splits Added To 4 Bridges Near Baltimore-Harford County Line

Four bridges along Route 40 have new traffic patterns as part of a $32 million project.

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — New barriers will split traffic on US 40/Pulaski Highway as crews work on the bridges over Little Gunpowder Falls and Gunpowder Falls.

The $32.6 million rehabilitation project involves four bridge spans on Route 40 between White Marsh in Baltimore County and Joppatowne in Harford County.

Crews will be replacing the driving surface and concrete support beams on the bridges.

Officials said they would install long-term traffic splits Sunday and Monday.

"Please plan for extra travel time on this segment of US 40 near Joppatowne," state highway officials said. "Look ahead for crews and equipment moving through the construction work zone."

For about five months — or until December — crews under the direction of Fallston company Allan Myers will work on the bridge decks using the bottom configuration pictured below:

Officials expect the entire project — which will widen the bridges so they have two lanes and 10-foot shoulders — to be complete by spring 2023, weather permitting.

Widening the bridges will make it safer for cyclists and the 26,000 drivers who take this route each day, according to authorities.
