Unusual Odor Forced Evacuation At Perry Hall Middle School

An unusual odor forced Perry Hall Middle School to evacuate. Nobody was hurt, but some students were evaluated and cleared by medics.

PERRY HALL, MD — An unusual odor forced the evacuation of Perry Hall Middle School on Friday, but classes resumed safely this week.

Administrators said they learned about the odor around 1:30 p.m.

"As a precaution, we implemented the school’s evacuation procedures and notified Baltimore County Fire Department and emergency officials," Principal Justin Benjamin said Friday in his first letter to families.

The fire department said there was "no immediate danger to the children." Students waited at a safe distance from the school. Families were initially asked not to pick up their children, but students later dismissed safely.

Nobody was hurt. Children who reported symptoms were evaluated and cleared, the fire department said.

"Thank you for your flexibility and patience," Benjamin said in a second letter later Friday. "The Baltimore County Fire Department investigated the odor and cleared the building of any imminent threat or hazard."

The school was open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for students to retrieve their belongings.

"Thank you again for your cooperation, and we look forward to seeing everyone back on Monday," Benjamin wrote in his second Friday letter.
