Winston Churchill Students, Staff Lose Beloved Teacher

Staff and students at Winston Churchill High School will be offered counseling services after the death of a math teacher here.


Craig Whyte, a calculus teacher at , has passed away.

Churchill students were informed Wednesday morning and parents were notified through the school's notification system. 

The announcement read:

"Dr. [Joan] Benz learned late [Tuesday] afternoon that Mr. Craig Whyte, a beloved teacher in our math department, had passed away. Students were informed [Wednesday] morning of this sad news and we wanted the parents to be aware that Mr. Whyte's death has had a grave impact on every member of the Churchill community."

Circumstances surrounding his death had not been release by the time of this posting.

There is counseling support at the school to those who want or need to talk.

The school system learned of Whyte's passing Tuesday, according to Dana Tofig, director of public information at Montgomery County Public Schools.

"We did have a teacher at Churchill that has died," Tofig said. "Whenever we have a situation like this we make counselors available to the students. We give the students and the staff and colleagues a chance to grieve and talk about feelings as they need to."
