University Park Pastor to Bless Neighborhood Pets
Riverdale Presbyterian Church will hold the event on Oct. 1.

Each Sunday, some of University Park's residents head to church.
However, on Saturday, Oct. 1, any resident regardless of religious affiliation can bring the family pet to , so that the pet can be blessed by The Reverend Loril Hawk.
"It's a way for us to reach out to the community, bring people together," Hawk said. "We're looking for ways to get involved to the community."

The tradition comes from the Catholic Church as a remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi's love of animals, she said, but has moved into other faith traditions.
Any pet is welcome — cats, dogs, gerbils, mice, snakes, birds and even photos of deceased pets.

The blessing will take place in the grassy patch next to the church and each participant will receive a certificate.
"We hope it becomes an annual fall event," Hawk said. "And I hope it's a real memorable event for folks."
