ROCKVILLE, MD — Two Montgomery County hospitals are expected to receive the first shipment of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine this week.

Multiple media outlets reported that about 975 doses of the vaccine will be sent to both Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center and Adventist HealthCare White Oak Medical Center.

They are among the two dozen hospitals in Maryland to be selected, according to NBC4. The other facilities include Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Luminis Anne Arundel Medical Center in Parole, and Carroll Hospital in Westminster.

Bob Atlas, the president and CEO of Maryland Hospital Association, told NBC4 that the hospitals were selected based on the number of front-line workers and their ability to meet the cold storage requirements for the vaccine.

During a press conference last week, Gov. Larry Hogan (R) said the state would receive about 50,000 doses of the first round of Pfizer's vaccine. They'd first be distributed to healthcare workers in hospitals, first responders, and long-term care facility staff and residents.

Then, people with chronic health conditions and other essential workers, such as teachers and transit employees, will be eligible to receive the vaccine.
